SHEN’s successful funding bids for home-educated children and young adults

By admin

Home educated young people in Sheffield had funding for a number of activities this year. The funding was accessed via their bid to the Youth Opportunities Fund. This is a national programme accessed through local authorities. http://www.everychildmatters.gov.uk/youthmatters/youthfund/ There are a number of really good things about this funding stream. * Bids are led and researched by young people themselves. * You don't need a huge group of young people before you can apply. In Sheffield you must have five young people who meet the criteria * The paperwork and the monitoring is not too daunting  and can largely be managed by the young people with some input from their named" responsible adult". Funding has been used for a 3 day residential at Edale Youth Hosel where young people tried canoeing, climbing, caving , orienteering, a night walk, group building activities and abseiling. http://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/peak-district-sherwood/hostels/Edale/index.aspx We have also run an art group, had dance lessons, enjoyed a day with a professional photographer learning more about taking good photographs, tried water sports on a day at Rother Valley http://www.rothervalley.f9.co.uk/ and assisited with funding for those undertaking their Gold Duke of Edinburgh award. Sixteen young people gained certificates in personal survival in the olympic sized pool at Ponds Forge Without the funding many families could... »
